Discussing Little Heathens by Mildred Armstrong Kalish

We chose to read Little Heathens: Hard times and High Spirits on an Iowa Farm During the Great Depression for our November selection because we wanted a nonfiction book to which we could all relate.  Here in farm country in Central Illinois, did we ever relate!  Though only a few of us lived on a farm in the Depression, we shared many memories with Kalish.  We shared homespun wisdom passed on by our parents and grandparents.  We laughed about our own families and their homegrown medicines such as Vicks slathered on our chests (one of us was told to swallow it!) and kerosene used on our cuts.  We marveled at the thrifty ways of our own families who never wasted a thing and agreed that not everything about those times was negative.  Thanks, Mildred Kalish, for giving us a chance to share some memories and laughter with you.
