Recharge Your Book Club

I attended a program today called "Recharge Your Book Club" and the presenter Becky Spratford had some excellent resources for book groups.

The first thing I'd like to share is a link to her blog, RA for All.  RA=Readers' Advisory. Becky's blog has lots of great information not only on the program I attended (her slides are linked) but she has lots of information about reading for enjoyment and how to make Readers' Advisory interactions fun and rewarding.

She also had some links for online book resources on her blog post, Streamlining My Book Discussion Resources.  Many of the resources are sites I use regularly like LitLovers.com but there are a couple of new ones too.

Finally, she mentioned the Mary Higgins Clark award winners for those interested in mysteries.  These books follow the following criteria:
  • The protagonist is a nice young woman whose life is suddenly invaded.
  • She’s self-made and independent, with primarily good family relationships.
  • She has an interesting job.
  • She is not looking for trouble–she is doing exactly what she should be doing and something cuts across her bow.
  • She solves her problem by her own courage and intelligence.
  • The story has no on-scene violence
  • The story has no strong four-letter words or explicit sex scenes.
I think we are doing a lot of things right during our book discussions but it's always fun to hear suggestions on how to make our events even better!
